HOW TO MAKE REED PELLETS? INDUSTRIAL PROCESSING FLOW CHART

Reed pellet mills can transform reeds into dense pellets that are easy to store and transport, and are widely used in animal feed or biomass fuel. The process mainly includes four core steps: pre-crushing, fine crushing, pelletizing, and the cooling and packaging section. The parameters of each step can be flexibly adjusted according to the moisture content, fiber fineness, and other characteristics of the reed raw material to ensure the production of high-quality reed pellets.

Step 1: Pre-crushing section – reed crusher

Reed crusher is the first step in the reed canary grass pellet production line. Reed stalks can be up to 30mm wide, with flat stems, and the length can reach 2.5 meters naturally, even 3 meters or more. For this reason, the reed stalk must first be pre-crushed by the reed crusher into 5-10 cm small pieces. Then the crushed reed material can perfectly match the fine crushing hammer mill, effectively avoiding material blockage and machine clog problem during production, ensuring operation continuously and stably of the entire production line. And the reed crushing machines significantly improve the overall processing efficiency of the reed pellet production line.

Step 2: Fine crushing section – reeds hammer mill

The pre-crushed reed raw material is further pulverized to a fineness of 10mm, fully meeting the requirements for reed pellet making machine. Harvested reeds are generally piled outdoors to dry, with a moisture content below 15%, eliminating the need for additional drying during processing and effectively saving production energy. Reed fibers have high hardness, so hammer mills can achieve excellent pulverization results. Due to the low bulk density and soft feature, a dedicated feeding fan and a high-efficiency bag filter are required during production. These systems not only ensure stable material conveying and maintain the rated operating current of the main unit, significantly improving crushing efficiency, but also effectively collect dust, control dust pollution, and meet international environmental emission standards.

Step 3: Pellet making section – reed pellet mill

The reed pellet mill is the core equipment for the whole reed pellet production line. Compared with wood pellets, the reed pellets feature higher ash content and lower heat value, which are more suitable for large industrial use, such as power plants, cement factories, and industrial boilers. Therefore, we do not recommend using the small packing machines to save extra packaging expenses. The chain-type reed pellet cooler is professionally adjusted to fit reed pellet properties, improving the cooling efficiency. For the packing section, we suggest building large pellet silos on site for reed pellet storage, and we can offer you pellet bin design drawings for you to cut down your later construction and investment costs.

What is the difference between a reed pellet machine and a wood pellet machine?

The main difference is that we specially customized the reducer and ring die for the reed pellet machine. Reed fibers are harder and have poor adhesion, and it is quite different from wood raw materials. TCPEL reed pellet machine is equipped with a suitable press rate and a customized feeding system, which avoids clog problems that often occur when standard wood pellet machines process reeds. It also reduces equipment wear and improves the reed pellet forming efficiency.

Usually no need to dry. Most reed raw materials have a suitable moisture content 10%-18%, which is just right for pellet forming. Drying will increase energy consumption, so if not a must, we usually do not suggest using the dryer.
